The Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Association kicks off in Washington, DC this Wednesday, November 29. As president of the Society for Cultural Anthropology (SCA), I cordially invite you to all of the exciting events that the society is sponsoring this year, including our signature Culture@Large session, featuring Gayatri Spivak, on Friday, December 1, from 2–3:45 p.m. (Marriott, Washington, Room 5).
In particular, I invite you to attend the SCA Business Meeting on Friday, December 1, from 12:15–1:30 p.m. (Marriott, Delaware, Suite B). At this meeting, we will be introducing new board members, including incoming SCA President Peter Redfield, and reporting on the state of the society’s finances and publishing activities. We will introduce the incoming editorial team for our peer-reviewed journal Cultural Anthropology. We will award this year’s Cultural Horizons Prize for the best article published in Cultural Anthropology in 2016, as well as the Gregory Bateson Book Prize.
In the spirit of innovation and collaboration, the SCA will be holding its biennial spring meeting as a virtual conference, cosponsored by the Society for Visual Anthropology. At Friday’s business meeting, SCA board member and conference organizer Anand Pandian will offer an update on conference planning and a preview of how the conference will be organized. The deadline for submitting proposals is December 8, 2017, and the Annual Meeting will provide an excellent opportunity to think with colleagues about possibilities for presentations and local engagements with the conference.
On Friday morning, from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., Cultural Anthropology editor Dominic Boyer will offer a workshop on “Publishing with Cultural Anthropology” (Marriott, Park Tower 8216). While this workshop is listed in the conference program as a paid event, it is, in fact, free and open to all: those who already registered and paid the workshop will have it refunded after the meetings.
On Friday evening, from 7:45–9 p.m., the SCA and Rice University will be hosting a reception (Marriott, Roosevelt 2). We invite you to drop by and talk with SCA officers, members of the incoming and outgoing Cultural Anthropology editorial teams, and fellow members of the society. Free drink tickets will be provided to our first 100 partygoers!
Finally, the SCA is sponsoring four invited panels:
Thursday, November 30, 4:15–6 p.m. (Marriott, Washington, Room 1)
