Advanced Graduate Students Needed for the Cultural Horizons Prize Jury

For nearly three decades, the Society for Cultural Anthropology (SCA) has been distinguished by one of the largest graduate student memberships of any section of the American Anthropological Association. Recognizing that doctoral students are among the most experimentally minded—and often among the best read—of ethnographic writers, the SCA wants to know: “Who is on your reading horizon?”

This spirit gave rise to the Cultural Horizons Prize, awarded yearly by a jury of advanced doctoral students, for the best article appearing in Cultural Anthropology during the preceding year.

The SCA is now soliciting volunteers who have completed fieldwork and are “ABD” (have completed all program requirements except their dissertation) to serve on the 2018 Cultural Horizons jury. The task involves reading through the 2017 volume of Cultural Anthropology over the summer before delivering a collective decision by early August. Each member of the jury will receive a modest honorarium to help defray the cost of attending the 2018 annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association in San Jose, California in order to present the award to the recipient.

In composing the jury, we will aim to cover the widest range of research interests consonant with the SCA’s membership. We will also heed the SCA's ethos, one that prioritizes interdisciplinarity, ethnography, theoretical innovation, and literariness. To apply, doctoral students who have advanced to candidacy and completed dissertation fieldwork should send:

  1. A paragraph-length statement of research interests and qualifications. In this paragraph, please indicate your current status/stage of doctoral study, since members of the jury must have already completed their dissertation research and be in the process of writing up.
  2. A current curriculum vitae
  3. A short (one-paragraph) note of recommendation from a dissertation committee member.

Applications may be sent as Word or PDF files to Cultural Horizons Prize Chair Zeynep Gürsel at zgursel@macalester.edu. Please use “Horizons Prize Committee” in the subject heading when submitting your application. The deadline for receipt of all application materials is Monday, April 30, 2018. Decisions will be made later that week.
