Contributing Editors Program

In 2008, Cultural Anthropology established an editorial intern program to help extend the journal’s readership and to mentor the next generation of anthropologists during their graduate training. This model went on to inspire similar programs at other leading anthropology journals and blogs. In recognition of the invaluable (and largely uncompensated) labor that graduate students provide, the name of the program was changed in 2014 and participants now carry the title of Contributing Editor.

Contributing editors create, edit, and curate digital content for the Cultural Anthropology website including author interviews, themed collections of articles, podcasts, instructional materials, and more. Our social media team maintains the journal’s presence on Facebook and Twitter, while our section editors solicit content and define an editorial vision for their corner of the website. Many of our innovative streams of web content started as the brainchild of one or two contributing editors, and Cultural Anthropology prides itself on empowering and learning from early-career scholars.

The Contributing Editors Program is open to graduate students anywhere in the English-speaking world: participants have come from universities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Western Europe. Incoming contributing editors are encouraged to commit to two years of service; the next call for participants will be announced in August 2018.
